Bath

Bath Maine "The City of Ships"

Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River, this city prides itself on its old seafaring history, vibrant daily life, and a strong sense of community. Bath was listed as one of the "Best Small Cities in America" and was deemed a "Distinctive Destination" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Bath is located on a beautiful broad stretch of the Kennebec River, whose deep waters helped create and sustain a centuries-old shipbuilding tradition. Shipyards once lined the river’s edge and Bath-built vessels sailed the seas of the world. Bath remains strong in its maritime traditions and is home of the world-class shipbuilding company Bath Iron Works and the nationally acclaimed Maine Maritime Museum, which offers a variety of exhibits on our state’s nautical history.

Vibrant retail and service centers along historic Downtown Bath and U.S. Route 1 contribute to Bath's vitality. Beautiful Downtown Bath has a unique mix of services, shops, and restaurants, which cater to locals and visitors alike.

Many residents who move to Bath cite community involvement as a big reason for their move to Bath and often comment on how much this “small city” offers for its size.  Hundreds of organizations offer shows, events, classes and other opportunities for fun and learning.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Bath one of “America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations” for 2005. “Bath is a jewel hidden in plain sight,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust. “A small, historic and relatively unspoiled New England town, Bath had the good sense to hang on to what makes it so special. The result is a vibrant community that offers travelers an ideal retreat.”

Come take a walk down Front and Centre Streets, through the 19th century brick buildings and narrow streets, and feel the comfortable pace and friendly pedestrian atmosphere. Rest in the lovely Library and Waterfront Parks or walk the city streets to admire the City’s tree-lined avenues, graced by both humble and grand examples of classic American architecture – the historic downtown, gothic churches, and sea captain’s homes.
