Retire

Looking to retire to Maine?  We are one of five states in the nation that are experiencing in-migration, and this in-migration is heavily fueled by people who retire in Maine. Attracted by the combination of small town charm, abundant nature, numerous outdoor activities, and a rich culture and the arts scene, many choose the communities of the Southern Midcoast area. Named one of CNNMoney's best places to retire in 2005.

CULTURE ABOUNDS

Galleries, museums, and festivals abound in the Midcoast, and prove a powerful draw for individuals moving to the area. Friday night Open Galleries and Art Walks, where galleries stay open late, draw locals for an evening out. Cultural organizations like the Chocolate Church, Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Theater Project and Maine State Music Theatre provide diverse entertainment options and draw musicians, theater productions and other performing artists from around the world. Museum options include the Maine Maritime Museum, Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and the Portland Museum of Art.

GET ACTIVE

Many retirees choose Maine as a place to be outside and be active. Outdoor enthusiasts can ski and snowshoe all winter, and then sail and play golf in the summer. In a region that boasts four golf courses, numerous walking trails (both in town and out of town), State Parks on the ocean, and nineteen public boat launches, opportunities are abundant to live an active life.

THE ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE

A large draw for people moving to the region is Bowdoin College. Concerned about retiring and loosing your intellectual edge? Audit a class at Bowdoin. The college offers this service to any member of the community, creating an environment where students and community members learn side by side during the college season. The popular Friends of Bowdoin program creates additional opportunities for community members to become involved and participate in an academic environment. Many lectures and performing arts programs are open to the public. Dozens of enrichment courses are offered by Merrymeeting Regional Adult Education, Bailey Evening School and Maine Vocation Region Ten. Midcoast Senior College provides intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for persons 55 years of age and older.

QUALITY HEALTH CARE

The Midcoast region is fortunate to be home to two top-notch regional community hospitals – Mid Coast Hospital and Parkview Adventist Medical Center, both located in Brunswick. Parkview Adventist Medical Center combines a tradition of wellness and personalized care with state of the art technology and the highest quality services. Mid Coast Hospital is the newest full-service, stand-alone community hospital in New England, offering acute care, inpatient, and outpatient services. The services of the two hospitals create an environment rich with quality health care options within the region. Maine Medical Center, which is Maine’s premier referral hospital, is located only 26 miles south in Portland.

LOCAL CHARACTER

A large draw for individuals is the unique character of our regions multiple Main Street environments. The towns of Bath, Brunswick, and Wiscasset each offer traditional, brick-lined main street locations – with locally run and owned coffee shops, boutiques, bookstores, pharmacies, and gourmet food stores. Harpswell, Bowdoinham, and Richmond offer unique “village center” environments, maintaining a lifestyle and ambience lost in many regions of country. These special environments create a lifestyle and quality of life and place that make the Southern Midcoast region a truly desirable place to live.  So retire to Maine, and realize your dream.
