Chamber Annual Award Recipients

Brunswick, Maine  – The Southern Midcoast Chamber (SMMC) is excited and proud to announce the recipients of its annual awards. The awards will be presented on January 23, 5 – 8 p.m. at the Chamber’s “Big Night Out” event at the former Borders Bookstore, Merrymeeting Plaza, 147 Bath Rd., Brunswick. Carrie Coleman Strausburger of Brunswick, Maine, is the recipient of the prestigious “Citizen of the Year” award. This award was initiated in 1958 and recognizes an individual who, through his or her unselfish commitment to the community, embodies the best characteristics of community citizenship and serves as an example to all.

Captain James A. Kirk, US Navy, is the recipient of the Joshua L. Chamberlain Award. Captain Kirk is the Commanding Officer, Pre-Commissioning Unit ZUMWALT (DDG-1000), Bath, Maine. He is recognized for his outstanding dedication and service toward the best possible l military-community relationship. Solider, statesman, educator and businessman Joshua L. Chamberlain is the namesake for this award, first given in 1976.

Earning business of the year honors is JHR Development of Maine, LLC and for small business of the year, Simply Susie’s Catering. Selection is based upon: business growth and improvement, good financial health, quality customer service, staying power, overall excellence in the marketplace, and community contributions.

New Business Venture of the Year recipient is  RollEase, a new business located at Brunswick Landing that has demonstrated business growth, quality customer service and community contributions.  The Young Professional of the Year is an up and coming young Chamber business professional in the region and it is awarded to Michelle Curtis (Bar Harbor Bank & Trust). Chamber Volunteer of the Year is awarded to James Nylund (Wells Fargo Advisors) who facilitated the monthly Chamber 12 @ 12 lunches. SMMC Chair Cathy Barter chose attorney Arthur J. Lamothe (Brunswick & Bowdoinham)as the recipient of the Chairman’s Award in recognition of the many and varied contributions that he has made to the Chamber.
