Mid Coast Health Announces Nurse Leader

March 9, 2015

BRUNSWICK, ME – Kristin Sims, RNC, MSN, NEA-BC, has joined the leadership team of Mid Coast Health Services as the Vice President for Nursing and Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. With more than 30 years of healthcare experience, her strategic direction and vision will lead the development and continued excellence of the clinical nursing practice throughout the organization.

Sims commented, “It is an honor to join the outstanding nursing staff and leadership at Mid Coast Health. The dedication and commitment throughout the organization to deliver the highest level of care to our community is remarkable. I am delighted to apply my experience and knowledge as we continue to move forward as the leader of health in this region.”

As Chief Nursing Officer Sims oversees all nursing staff, Surgical Services, Behavioral Health, and Quality and Patient Safety teams with an emphasis on compassionate care, patient satisfaction, and the high standards established and recognized through the hospital’s Magnet® designation. Originally awarded in 2009, Mid Coast Hospital is the only community hospital in Maine to achieve Magnet designation, the highest and most prestigious international distinction a healthcare organization or hospital can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care.

For the past ten years Sims held the Chief Nursing Officer position at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, Michigan, where she successfully led the Magnet designation process for the organization. Her previous experience also includes progressive nursing leadership and clinical roles in Maternal Child Health.

Sims received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. She is board certified as a Nurse Executive-Advanced and also Inpatient Obstetrical Nursing. She is certified in LEAN Healthcare performance improvement from the University of Michigan.

Sims is also the co-creator of The Wilson-Sims Falls Risk Assessment Tool (WSFRAT) and evidence-based tool developed to identify psychiatric hospital patients that are at risk for falling and require specific preventive nursing actions. This tool is used in the hospital setting as part of falls reduction programs, which includes assessing the patient’s risk of falling and the patient’s risk of injury therefore contributing to a higher level of care and safety.

Mid Coast Health Services President and CEO Lois Skillings, RN, commented, “Through her experience and dedication to nursing, Kristin understands and believes in our mission to deliver high quality healthcare and improve the health of the community we serve. She is a tremendous addition to our team.”
