PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $15,000 TO GULF OF MAINE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

June 27, 2014

As part of an ongoing effort to address the educational and developmental needs of children in the communities where People’s United Bank operates, the People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it has awarded $15,000 to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI), committed to sustaining a healthy ecosystem and vibrant communities in the Gulf of Maine bioregion, is widely respected as one of the top marine research institutions in the Northeast. Funding from People’s United Community Foundation will support the GMRI Lab Venture! Program, which has become one of Maine’s most innovative and impactful science learning experiences, opening the doors to science for more than 66,000 fifth and sixth grade students since its inception.

“We are pleased to once again have the support of People’s United Community Foundation for our LabVenture! education program,” stated Donald Perkins, President of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. “The foundation’s commitment to helping us promote science literacy in Maine through access to free hands-on learning is invaluable.”

“People’s United Community Foundation has been a committed supporter of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for the past five years,” stated Dan Thornton, Officer of People’s United Community Foundation and President of People’s United Bank in Southern Maine. “We are proud to be a part of their efforts in educating our youth about the extraordinary treasure we call the Gulf of Maine, as well as their commitment to sustaining this precious resource for future generations.”

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. People’s United Bank, founded in 1842 and serving customers from New York to Maine through a network of more than 400 branches, is the largest independent bank headquartered in New England. The Foundation places special emphasis on programs designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education and improved conditions for low-income families and neighborhoods. The funding priorities of the Foundation include community development, youth development, and affordable housing
