PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $47,500 TO MAINE NONPROFITS

PORTLAND, ME – The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it awarded $47,500 in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the communities it serves in Maine.

Ten organizations received funding in support of activities that ranged from homebuyer education programs and heating assistance, to programs for individuals with special needs. Recipients included Penquis C.A.P., Easter Seals Maine, The Opportunity Alliance, Coastal Enterprises, and York Community Service Association.

 In total, People’s United Community Foundation awarded $906,987 in grants to 132 nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine during its first grant cycle this year. The funding was distributed within the foundation’s three areas of focus, with 32 percent allocated to community development, 27 percent to youth development, and 22 percent to affordable housing initiatives. The People’s United Community Foundation also contributed 19 percent of its funding to local United Way organizations across its footprint through the People’s United Bank employee match campaign.

 Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. The Foundation places special emphasis on programs designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education and improved conditions for low-income families and neighborhoods.
