University College, SMCC sign transfer agreements to ensure seamless transfer to University College programs

February 18, 2016

University College and Southern Maine Community College have signed new agreements that ensure graduates from select SMCC academic programs a smooth transition to correlating programs at University College that will prepare them for successful careers in high-demand industries.

University of Maine at Augusta President Dr. James Conneely and SMCC President Dr. Ron Cantor on Tuesday signed two transfer agreements that allow graduates from SMCC’s Business Administration and Human Services associate degree programs to seamlessly transfer credits to University College’s Business and Mental Health and Human Services baccalaureate degree programs.

The detailed agreements, known as articulation agreements, were signed at SMCC’s Midcoast Campus in Brunswick, where the University College at Bath/Brunswick, a University of Maine System distance education outreach center, is located.

“Ensuring that students who earn an associate degree have the support that they need to continue with their studies and earn a bachelor’s degree is an important objective for the University of Maine System,” said Dennis Unger, Director of University College at Bath/Brunswick. “This agreement provides a smooth transition for SMCC students to successfully take the next step in their education.”

The partnership between SMCC and University College contributes to student success at both institutions, said SMCC President Cantor.

“Student success is our top priority from start to finish”,” he said. “These agreements smooth the transfer process, allowing students to pre-plan their college careers and save time and money along the way.”

Online, affordable and supported by eight local Centers across Maine, University College allows students – traditional, adult and those returning to complete their degree – access to over 100 certificate and degree programs from the University of Maine System. Students access the resources of campuses while studying online, at their local Center, or pursuing a mix of online and traditional classroom instruction while staying close to home.

Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) is Maine’s largest and oldest community college. Founded in 1946, SMCC offers courses at its South Portland and Brunswick campuses, at community satellite locations and online. SMCC has among the lowest tuition and fees in New England and offers more than 45 degree programs.
