The story of the play concerns 20-year-old Telemachus Clay who leaves his small home town in the East and travels to Hollywood seeking his fortune as a writer. He finds little but cynicism and corruption there and his script, a Utopian fantasy about humans creating a new and better world, is roundly rejected. He returns home, battered but still optimistic, to the girl and child he left behind, intent on making a better world instead of just writing about it.
