Dear Chamber Member,
We are pleased to provide this opportunity for Maine businesses to attend an information briefing on "Cyber-Security / Best Practices".
The United States Department of Homeland Security - in partnership with U.S. Senator Angus King and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce -will hold a free briefing on cyber security best practices for Maine businesses, on Tuesday, August 18. DHS Assistant Secretary Jose Perales-Hernandez and DHS Northeast Cyber-Security Advisor Michael Leking will give a thorough presentation on how to strengthen cyber-resilience in the face of potential cyber-attacks.
The briefing will run from 10am to noon Texas Instruments has graciously offered to host the event in their Moosehead room at 52 Jetport Plaza Road in South Portland. The event is free, but pre-registration is required at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/department-of-homeland-security-briefing-of-cyber-security-best-practices-tickets-18101667575. Register today as space is limited to 100 attendees.
As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator King has highlighted the danger that cyber-attacks pose to America's businesses and has repeatedly called for Congress to pass federal cyber-security legislation. In the absence of federal legislation, however, there are steps that businesses can take on their own to better protect themselves against cyber-attacks, including information sharing measures, which will be discussed during the briefing.
Senator King's staff has spoken with a variety of Maine businesses within the health, defense, financial, education, and consumer products sectors, almost all of which expressed serious concern about cyber-security or had even experienced some type of cyber-intrusion. In fact, according to a recent report by McAfee and the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the annual cost to the global economy from cyber-crime is more than $445 billion with losses that could translate into more than 200,000 jobs lost in the U.S.
