"Community Economics" 8:30 AM The Daniel , Brunswick

On October 22, 2015, Brunswick Maine will become the classroom for the fourth session of The Community Institute (TCI), a program of Friends of Midcoast Maine. “Community Economics” will feature top notch national instructors as well as state and regional experts to address the issues and decisions that build strong communities and improve our tax base and community life, and the decisions that can improve life for property owners, taxpayers and businesses. Join this session to learn the facts, the nuts and bolts, and the numbers that don't lie, about how we can build healthy and strong Maine communities.

Faculty includes Charles Marohn of Strong Towns, Joe Minicozzi of Urban 3 LLC, Yellow Light Breen of the Maine Development Foundation, Rob Brown of Business Owners Solutions, Kenneth Greenleaf of MaineStream Finance, Jonathan LaBonte of the City of Auburn, Kevin Bunker of Developers Collaborative, Paul Boghossian, Waterville developer, Valli Geiger of Rockland, Misty Parker of the City of Lewiston and Jane Lafleur from Friends of Midcoast Maine.

Community Economics will be held at The Daniel in downtown Brunswick on Thursday, October 22 from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. Registration is available on-line at www.communityinstitute.org. The registration fee includes all materials, breakfast and lunch, and access to all speakers. Some partial scholarships are available based upon financial need.

The Community Institute works to provide training, discussions, and learnings for lay-people and professionals to learn more about the issues and opportunities in order to build economically and socially healthy, communities throughout Maine. TCI programs are designed to engage community member, volunteers and grassroots leaders, city and town staff people and all who are interested in improving their communities while maintaining their unique quality of place.

“The Community Institute builds strong places, communities and leaders through practical instruction on community and economic development with national technical expertise, field work and leadership development,” said Jane Lafleur, Executive Director of Friends of Midcoast Maine. Future sessions include Farms, Foods and the Conservation Connection (for economically healthy communities) on February 4, 2016, in Belfast, and Maine’s Millennials - Their Social & Economic Impact on April 7, 2016 in Damariscotta.
