AHCH Earns Level 1 Status with “We Honor Veterans”

February 20, 2015

Lewiston, Maine: In 2014, Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice (AHCH) formed a partnership with the national We Honor Veterans organization to expand their services to community veterans. In order to obtain this partnership, AHCH had to achieve level 1 status.

Reaching level 1 status requires that education centered on veteran patients and end-of-life support be available for hospice staff and volunteers to review. Following this requirement, hospice staff and volunteers also had to review and familiarize themselves with the Military History Checklist. The checklist can be introduced into the referral/intake process to better understand and care for the unique needs of military patients and their families.

Achieving level 1 status has given AHCH the ability to move forward with other programs, such as, the Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program. The program is focused on pairing recruited veteran volunteers with hospice patients who are also veterans. The program is dedicated to serving veteran hospice patients and providing a significant impact in their life.

AHCH requires that volunteers for the vet-to-vet program be military veterans and be willing to support military patients at the end-of-life. To ensure volunteers are equipped with the right tools and information to help hospice veterans, AHCH volunteers receive 20-hours of hospice training and 2-hours of veteran-to-veteran training.

Volunteers are asked to commit at least 2-hours of visiting each week. They provide companionship and respite time, so the patient’s family caregiver can have a much needed break.

If you’re a veteran and interested in volunteering, please contact the Volunteer Office at 777-7740 ext. 1280.  To view any upcoming training classes, please visit www.ahch.org/News-Events/Calendar
