Are you caring for someone with Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease?

March 21, 2016

Are you taking care of a family member or friend with dementia?  Are you looking for some strategies to help manage your loved one’s behaviors and keep him or her content at home?  Could you use more information to help improve upon your care giving skills and attitude? If so, we will be offering this 6 week course at the United Methodist Church, 320 Church Rd, Brunswick, Me. Classes will be held Mondays from 9:30am to 11:30am, starting April 18th –May 23rd.

Family members often take on caregiving without preparation or training. Participants will learn what dementia is and how it affects the individual. They will also develop skills on how to interact and communicate with a person with dementia.  Furthermore, caregivers will also learn about resources and services available for support.

After attending the program, caregivers often report positive changes in their expectations and attitudes. One caregiver stated, “I think I am more patient with my Mom- most of the time at least-realizing that what is going on with her is most often not her choice. I have enjoyed the sessions very much overall. Thanks!”

Throughout the 6 week program, participants build an attitude that fosters confidence and a sense of mastery in their caregiver role. Feedback will be provided and strategies developed to support successful caregiving. These trainings are sponsored by the Office of Elder Services, Department of Health and Human Services and funded by a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.

Pre-registration is required. For more information, or to register, please call Liz at 620-1656. To learn more about Spectrum Generations visit us online at www.spectrumgenerations.org or like us on Facebook.

Spectrum Generations is the central Maine Area Agency on Aging as well as a federally designated Aging and Disability Resource Center. We serve older and disabled adults – plus those who care for them – Our service area covers the six central Maine counties of Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset and Waldo, plus the towns of Brunswick and Harpswell in Cumberland County. We bridge the gap between traditional medical services, and home and community. These services allow them to age in place, in their own homes and communities, while maintaining independent, healthy, vital and dignified lives.

The public is invited to call the Agency’s Consumer Helpline at 1-800-639-1553. For more information on Spectrum Generations visit spectrumgenerations.org
