MID COAST CANCER PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ADVANCED CARE

January 18, 2019

BRUNSWICK, ME — For the third time in six years, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted Mid Coast Hospital’s comprehensive cancer care program a Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation at the Bronze Level. A national organization, the CoC is a team of experts dedicated to improving quality of life for cancer patients.

By achieving re-accreditation, Mid Coast Hospital is included in an elite group of just 30 percent of hospitals in the U.S. The commendation level of compliance is a special designation indicating that the Mid Coast program has not only met, but also exceeded benchmarks that represent the full scope and quality of cancer care available.

Specifically, Mid Coast received three standards with commendations: Standard 1.12 “Public Reporting of Outcomes,” Standard 2.1 “College of American Pathologists Protocols and Synoptic Reporting,” and Standard 5.6 “Data Submission; Accuracy of Data.”

“Receiving re-accreditation is an honor and a testament to the quality, comprehensive cancer care Mid Coast Hospital offers patients daily,” said Kristin Anthony, RNC, MSN, NEA-BC, and Vice President for Nursing and Patient Care Services at Mid Coast–Parkview Health. “Especially with the introduction of our new cancer care center, local people living with cancer can feel at ease knowing the most up-to-date treatment is available here at home.”

The cancer care program at Mid Coast Hospital, in partnership with the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network, includes preventative care, treatment programs, and educational resources, focusing on coordination among providers and specialists.

Receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to quality care close to home; comprehensive care with state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available; information about cancer clinical trials and new treatment options; access to cancer-related information, education and support; ongoing monitoring and improvement of care, and lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results.

Mid Coast Hospital’s program has also made significant advances to the cancer care available in our region in recent years. In spring 2018, the hospital’s brand-new Center for Cancer Care opened at 329 Maine Street, as part of the $6.2 million renovation and re-opening of the Parkview Campus.

In addition to treating those who have received a cancer diagnosis, Mid Coast Hospital is also passionate about providing preventative care, such screening the surrounding community. In May of 2018, Mid Coast held its annual community screening for skin cancer. Of the 146 individuals screened, 29 had positive findings requiring biopsy or follow-up. All of them were given the names of local dermatologists to seek further medical care.

The hospital’s cancer program also added a nurse navigator to its Breast and Surgical Oncology Clinic this year, as well as two nurse navigators in the Cancer and Blood Disorders Office, and an oncology social worker working in various locations. Patient navigation positions such as these help patients, families and caregivers to overcome barriers to accessing quality medical and psychosocial care.

With strong affiliations and a new state-of-the-art facility, Mid Coast Hospital is continuously looking for ways to improve patient experiences and outcomes, and is well positioned to contribute to better outcomes for cancer care regionally and statewide.
