Mid Coast Cycling Team Rides in Memory of Cancer Patient

 Sixteen cyclists on the Mid Coast team took part in this year’s Trek Across Maine, held June 19-21. The largest team in the Friends and Family Class, the 2015 Mid Coast cycling team raised more than $8,000 in support of the American Lung Association (ALA) and healthy lungs in Maine.

The Trek Across Maine is a 3-day, 180-mile cycling event from the mountains of Sunday River to the sea in Belfast. This year’s Mid Coast team members were Trish Carr, Darlene Chalmers, Lisa Dube, Rol Fessenden, Heather Lagasse, Paul LaPrad, Amy McLellen, Janet Moore, Andrew Rines, James Rines, Nathaniel Rines, William Rines, and Karleen Smart. Vice President for Nursing and Patient Care Services Kristin Sims and Morgan McMahan cheered the team on and provided snacks and cold beverages.

The 2015 Mid Coast team rode in memory of David Mason, a firefighter from Coppers Mills, Maine who died of Lung Cancer in March of this year. Mason’s mother, Charlene Donahue, joined the team on Saturday of the event.

Team captain Janet Moore commented, “We rode in memory of David, because he was a special person. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a joyful person. We felt very privileged to wear his photo on our shirts as we rode across the state.”

 Local Midcoast businesses also showed their support through donations of time and equipment. Bath Bus Services provided shuttle services to the event so the team could arrive together. Local bike shops also assisted with mechanical support and equipment.

 Moore commented, “We are so grateful for the support from our leadership and colleagues, as well as local businesses, friends, and families, for helping us achieve our goals of increasing awareness and funds to fight lung disease and improve air quality in Maine.”
