Mid Coast Hospital CenteringPregnancy Families Gather in Celebration
CenteringPregnancy Reunion held at Winslow Park in Freeport May 20

Brunswick, ME – On Sunday, May 20, Mid Coast Hospital held a celebration event at Winslow Memorial Park in Freeport to honor the more than 600 families who have taken part in CenteringPregnancy at Mid Coast Hospital since it began in 2010. Facilitated by the Mid Coast Medical Group–Women’s Health Care Midwifery team, CenteringPregnancy provides additional maternity care options for families while also improving outcomes.

“As a non-profit community hospital, we are continuously looking for ways to improve the quality of care we provide for our community,” said Kristin Anthony, RNC, MSN, NEA-BC, Vice President for Nursing and Patient Care Services, Mid Coast–Parkview Health. “CenteringPregnancy allows us to enhance the services we offer in order to meet the needs of all families in our region, while also providing the best possible experience for our patients.”

CenteringPregnancy is a model of group prenatal care that integrates basic prenatal health assessment and education with social support. It has resulted in better preparation for birth and parenting, as well as a decrease in cesarean section rates, decrease in premature and low birth weight births, and an increase in breastfeeding rates.

“Our Centering families create a community of support before, during, and after birth, often keeping in touch for many years,” said Dalit Wolfe, CenteringPregnancy Coordinator at Mid Coast Hospital. “Our Centering Reunion is way for all of us to come together again and share in the celebration of child birth, parenting, and friendship.”

Annie Smith of Freeport spoke at the event. “What a beautiful day to celebrate our friendship and bring our families together,” she said. “Let us not forget our beautiful journey to parenthood. Let us hold gratefulness in our hearts for our beautiful midwives, amazing providers, supportive friends, and our incredible families.”

As the only nationally certified CenteringPregnancy site in Maine, families travel from Freeport, Damariscotta, and beyond to join CenteringPregnancy groups at Mid Coast Hospital. Each year, Mid Coast Hospital delivers more than 600 babies; roughly 100 families take part in CenteringPregnancy.

“In addition to the five certified nurse midwives, the Mid Coast Medical Group–Women’s Health Care team has six board certified physicians and two nurse practitioners on staff,” said Anthony. Through this collaboration, we offer a full spectrum of obstetric and gynecologic services so that every family has a variety of options to choose from when selecting maternity care.”
