PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $10,000 TO MAINE’S GOOD SHEPHERD FOOD BANK

November 19, 2015

The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it has awarded $10,000 to Good Shepherd Food Bank.

Good Shepherd Food Bank sources and distributes nutritious food to low-income individuals and families in Maine. The funding from People’s United Community Foundation will support the Food Mobile Hunger Relief program in the Auburn-Lewiston and Bangor regions. Food Mobile delivers food directly to those in need and supplements other food distributions by Good Shepherd Food Bank to meet periodic demands beyond the capacities of area pantries.

“The $10,000 grant from People’s United Bank will fund nine Food Mobile distribution events,” said Kristen Miale, President of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “This will allow us to deliver about 60,000 pounds of nutritious food directly to needy families in the area.”

“One in four Maine children are food insecure, reflecting the fact that our state has the highest rate of food insecurity in New England,” said Dan Thornton, Officer of People’s United Community Foundation and Southern Maine President for People’s United Bank. “Food programs are critical to our community and Good Shepherd Food Bank is providing a much-needed service that we are pleased to support.”

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. People’s United Bank, founded in 1842 and serving customers from New York to Maine through a network of more than 400 branches, is the largest independent bank headquartered in New England. The Foundation places special emphasis on programs designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education and improved conditions for low-income families and neighborhoods. The funding priorities of the Foundation include affordable housing, community development, and youth development.
