PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $3,000 TO MAINE’S AVESTA HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

June 27, 2014

As part of its commitment to support affordable housing and the well-being of neighborhoods in the communities where People’s United Bank operates, the People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it has awarded $3,000 to Avesta Housing Development Corporation of Portland.

Avesta Housing advocates for affordable housing, provides housing opportunities and access to services for residents in need, and develops and manages more than 1,900 apartments at 67 properties in communities throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The funding from People’s United Community Foundation will support Avesta Housing’s NeighborWorks Home Ownership Center, which provides homebuyer education, homeownership counseling, financial capability training, post-purchase education and default intervention services.

“We appreciate the contribution from People’s United Community Foundation and its commitment to helping Maine residents buy and maintain their homes,” said Dana Totman, president and CEO of Avesta Housing. “We look forward to continuing our homebuyer education and foreclosure mediation services in southern Maine.”

“We are pleased to support Avesta Housing, which helps to create sustainable homeownership opportunities,” stated Dan Thornton, Officer of People’s United Community Foundation, and President of People’s United Bank in Southern Maine. “The Homeownership Center is an important program that enables individuals and families to improve their housing situation and quality of life.”
