PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS $4,000 TO CAMP SUNSHINE AT MAINE’S SEBAGO LAKE

The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, announced today that it has awarded a $4,000 grant to Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine.

Camp Sunshine offers respite and support to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families. The funding from People’s United Community Foundation will be awarded specifically to the Family Sponsorship Program, which provides families with therapeutic recreation and psychosocial counseling in a supportive environment year-round.

“We are most grateful for the generous continued support of People’s United Community Foundation,” said Michael Katz, Executive Director of Camp Sunshine.  “Through the foundation’s investment, Camp Sunshine will be able to bring more children with life-threatening illnesses and their families together at this unique sanctuary, where they have the opportunity to restore hope and receive some much-needed support, fun and relaxation.”

Camp Sunshine addresses the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family, from ill child, to parents and their siblings, through various stages of a child’s condition. Since inception, Camp Sunshine has provided a haven for over 30,000 individuals free of charge, offering an invaluable retreat to families whose lives are often in crisis because of the complications of a serious illness.

“We are pleased to once again provide funding support so that additional families can attend an upcoming Camp Sunshine retreat,” said Dan Thornton, Officer of People’s United Community Foundation and Southern Maine President for People’s United Bank. “For families confronting their child’s devastating illness, Camp Sunshine helps to alleviate the strain on the child and family members.”
