Red Cross Response: Local Fires and Hurricane Isaac Relief

September 7, 2012

TOPSHAM – American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers have responded to disasters in Bath, Waldoboro and Dresden over the last few days.  Overnight, Andrew Eckman of Bremen, was on the scene of a single family home fire in Bath at a home on Pearl Street.

Red Cross volunteers also responded to the needs of a Waldoboro family who lost their home last Thursday and the on-going disaster caused needs of a Dresden family.  The Mid Coast Chapter has disaster volunteers on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year  and in disasters situations like home fires, the Red Cross often provides assistance with temporary housing, as well as food, clothing and emotional support to the individuals and families affected.

Local residents, Sami Berry of Lisbon, along with Linda Blanton and Minnie Vazquez both of Bailey Island, have joined 30 volunteers from Maine and more than three thousand volunteers from around to country, who have been deployed along the Gulf Coast to aid in the disaster relief efforts.

“We are grateful to have enough dedicated and trained volunteers to respond to local disasters like home fires right here in our community and to lend support the massive relief efforts necessary to respond to Hurricane Isaac,” said Connie Jones, executive director.

Isaac continues its move inland with strong winds and flooding, and the Red Cross is providing thousands of people with food, shelter and other emergency services.  The Red Cross is focused on meeting people’s emergency needs and will continue to move more volunteers, equipment and supplies into affected communities.

The American Red Cross needs your help now. This is a massive relief effort and the Red Cross will be on the scene for weeks helping people recover. After a difficult summer of responding to wildfires, power outages and floods, the American Red Cross resources are stretched – and our costs are growing by the hour. People can provide immediate financial assistance by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or to make a $10 donation, please text REDCROSS to 90999.
