MAINE MARINE ART - Special Focus on Maine Maritime Museum Collection by Sarah Timm
July 24, 1-4 p.m., Maine Maritime Museum
Marine Painting encompasses a broad spectrum of subjects, artists, and movements that have shaped our own conceptions of the sea. This genre was born out of the Age of Exploration in the seventeenth century when Europe was expanding its trade networks and imperial horizons. Students will explore the evolution of marine painting from its 17th-century Dutch origins to the varied styles and artistic movements of the nineteenth century. This seminar will be located at Maine Maritime Museum and participants will have the opportunity to examine paintings from the museum collection by seminal marine painters from Europe and New England, such as Antonio Jacobsen, Charles Robert Patterson, and Thomas Buttersworth, Sr.
Sarah Timm, MA Art History, studied Medieval and Early Modern art and culture at Florida State University where she also taught courses in art history and public speaking. Sarah is currently the Manager of Interpretation at Maine Maritime Museum.
