MAINE POETS – A Brief Introduction to the Poets of Maine by Gary Lawless
August 6, 9 a.m.-noon, Midcoast Senior College
This three-hour seminar will give a brief introduction to the poets of Maine, starting with Native American poems, then following through Longfellow, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Robert P T Coffin, Edna St Vincent Millay, Elizabeth Coatsworth, Ruth Moore, Louise Bogan, May Sarton, Philip Booth, Theodore Enslin, Kate Barnes, and a number of current poets – with readings of selected poems, discussion, suggestions from those taking the seminar, and more.
A recommended introductory reading is The Maine Poets - An Anthology of Verse, edited by Wesley McNair.
Gary Lawless has taught six courses at Midcoast Senior College and has taught at Bates College and Mt. Ararat High School. He owns Gulf of Maine Bookstore, is a published poet, and received Maine Humanities Council’s 2017 Constance H. Carlson Public Humanities Prize.
