2020 Hacker’s Ball: A Covid- Considerate Tournament

Register link at the end of this detailed list.  Scroll to the bottom to register

Tournament Details: The annual chamber golf tournament, is one of the first of the year in the state and is designed for very friendly and relaxed competition.  Enjoy 18 holes of golf in this scramble format, with numerous side games at Brunswick Golf Club on Friday, June 26, 2020.

With Covid-19, we have had to make some modifications to this year’s tournament.  However there are many aspects of our
tournament that will remain and it will be so nice to get out and have a day on the course.  The two biggest changes this year concern registration and gatherings of 50 or more people.  Because of that, this is how this year’s tournament will run:

  1. Online Registration:
All teams will need to register online (online payment or invoice request)- scroll to the bottom of this posting

  2. Pick Your Tee Time:
Teams will have staggered tee times as all teams will be beginning on Hole #10. At registration you will choose your Tee Group:
Early Morning (8:00AM– 9:20AM), Mid-Morning (9:20-10:40), Late Morning (10:40-12 Noon).  Groups go off every 10 minutes.
If you register by Father’s Day (June 21) you will have a tee time by Tuesday June 23.

  3. No Pre-Tournament Starter Speech:
There will be no registration or pre-tournament speech as a group. The Starter will meet you in the clubhouse and go over tournament rules and a chamber rep. will meet you on your starting tee.

  4. To limit interactions at the course and handling of money:
    - Golf Enhancement Packages are included with your player fees. Typically over 85% of our players bought these $15 packages annually that include: 2 Mulligans, 1 Skirt and 1 String.  Mulligans are a do-over, skirts allow men to tee off from the women’s tee.  Skirts for women allow them to tee off from the men’s tee and hit a second shot, and only count it as one stroke.

    - Strings will not be used this year.  Instead your putter will be your string this year. Therefore it can extend the hole your putter length or you could improve your lie by your putter length.

-To avoid interactions at registration there will be no Gold Ball 50/50, no ticketed 50/50, no raffle of donated prizes and no golf bags to take on the course with you

    - In lieu of a bagged lunch, there will be a grill at the turn (midway through the round between Hole #18 & Hole #1).  Burgers and hot dogs and other items will be available for purchase.  If we get a lunch sponsor, we will have some team vouchers for this lunch

    - The putting contest will also happen at the turn.  This will be a suggested donation game.  It's five dollars suggested donation for three attempts, but give whatever you want.  You must give something to get your three attempts.  We will have a bucket for you to drop the $5 in (or $10 for two people/tries, or $20 for four people/tries). We will NOT make change.   Just have a few bucks in your pocket to do this is all.

    - The air cannon requires you pay them on-site and they have their own cleaning protocols to keep you safe.  Thus with this plan you take your wallet out once when you get there, which is at the turn where you can buy food at the grill, drop a few bucks in the putting contest bucket and pay for the air cannon tries within 60 feet of each other.

  1. Contest Holes:
We will have a Long Drive for Men & Women (Hole 16 or Hole 1), and a Closest to the Pin (Hole 5). For long drive we will have a volunteer on the hole who will move the stake for you (so that many players don’t touch the stake). For the closest to the pin we will either have a volunteer measuring, or we will provide each team with their own measuring tape that they can take home with them.  We are trying to secure the Air Cannon.  If we get the Air Cannon that will be on Hole #1 and Long Drive will be Hole #16.  If the Air Cannon is not available, we will have the long drive on #1.

  2. Post-Tournament Appetizers:
When you finish play on Hole #9, you are welcome to grab a drink and we will have a complimentary spread of post-tournament appetizers for our players. There will NOT be a post-tournament gathering (as we can’t by law) and also the first groups would be waiting hours for the last groups to come in. This is intentional, so that teams can mingle a bit with the teams that finish after them before heading home.  Winning teams and contest hole winners will receive their prizes the following week.

  3. Scoring/Website:
We will have a dedicated website for our tournament which will have an active leaderboard on it if you log your scores in while you play. If not, write them down and log them in after you are done.

  4. Prizes:
Typically we break the teams into two divisions based on handicaps but this year with the staggered starts, length of play throughout the day, not knowing who is in which division until the last team tees off and with an uncertain number of teams, we have opted to do divisions this year. We will award out prizes to the Top 2 Gross Teams (without handicap) and the Top 2 Net Teams (with handicap). The same team cannot win more than once.  We will award them in order of: 1st Gross, 1st Net, 2nd Gross, 2nd Net.

  5. Rules of Play/Covid Considerations:
The starter will go over all rules of play. Be aware there will be:
    - No pulling or touching of pins
    - Each hole has an insert disc so you don’t need to reach into the hole to get your ball
    - Only touch your own ball and clubs
    - Do not rake bunkers, simply level holes with your foot
    - On contest holes volunteers will move the long drive stake for you. If there is no volunteer to measure closest to the pin, one player should use the provided measuring tape and take it home.  For the putting contest, please let the volunteer be the only one to touch the balls
    - Using your putter as a “string”- each player uses their own putter. Do not touch someone else’s clubs
    - Golf carts will have a plexiglass divider separating the riders.  If you would like a cart on your own, say so and we can make the
adjustment.  If you want to walk, that is your choice, but that does not change the player fee price

  6. Player’s Fees, Hole Sponsorships & Tournament Sponsorships
    Player Fees:
Again, the fees for players have risen but not really, to $100 per player or $400 per foursome which is an
increase from the $85 it had been in recent years. HOWEVER, the $15 Enhancement package (or 2 mulligans, 1 string and 1 skirt) which the vast majority of players buy annually, is now included in the price. The big difference is that instead of paying for it before the tournament and exchanging money at the course, you get just get it.  Player fees include the cart fees, greens fees, long drive and closest to pin contest entries, and complimentary post-tournament appetizers. If you choose not to utilize those, your player fee does not change.
