Warmer Waters Bring Marine Invasion - Virtual Event 7:00 PM Cathance River Education Alliance (CREA) , Virtual

Climate change has caused more rapid warming to the Gulf of Maine (our backyards) than almost any place on the globe and we are seeing the impacts. Our lobster population has been moving northward to Canada at a rate of 4-5 miles a year in search of cooler waters.

Less cold-tolerant invasive species are increasing in abundance in our coastal waters. Populations of one in particular, the European Green Crab (EGC), have exploded locally, capturing the attention of local fishers, researchers, and community members. Widely-ranging strategies for dealing with this problematic invader have been proposed, and some are now being piloted.

Please join CREA and our co-sponsor Green Steps of Highland Green as we welcome marine biologist Dr. Marissa McMahan for a (virtual) presentation and discussion of issues surrounding ECG and other marine invasives.

Dr. McMahon, who comes from a family of commercial fishermen in Georgetown, is Director of Fisheries at Manomet in Brunswick, adjunct faculty at USM and UMO, and mentors students at UNE and Bates College. She is an avid scuba diver (yes, even in the Maine winter) and has studied the biology of the EGC.
