Steps in Time: Dance as Cultural Performance
with June Vail
September 28 at 5:30pm
at Pejepscot History Center, 159 Park Row, Brunswick, Maine
Dancing is a fundamentally human activity: a badge of identity, a mode of communication, a force in social life. Everyone dances: How we move and dance are physical, emotional, spiritual, aesthetic, and social behaviors. So, are all dances “ethnic?” How does a tango, a pas de deux, a Super Bowl half-time show, or an Abenaki line dance embody and communicate messages for participants and viewers? What can the comparative study of dance tell us about contemporary American — as well as more unfamiliar — cultures? June Vail, founder of Bowdoin’s dance program and Professor of Dance Emerita, discusses dance as cultural performance.
