Julie Babb: Our Maine Birds Exhibit All Day Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens , Boothbay, Maine

Julie Babb exhibit opens at the Gardens

While the opening reception for “Julie Babb: Our Maine Birds” at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is on Friday evening, June 8, the exhibit of bird-related artwork in gouache and graphite by this renowned artists will be on view in the Visitor Center from June 1 through July 8. Accompanying the art will be “bird bios” by knowledgeable birder and Gardens volunteer BJ Dobson. The free public celebration for the exhibit on June 8 is from 5-7 p.m.; refreshments will be available.

Born in New York City and raised in Mexico City, Babb moved to Maine in 1962, when she married her husband, Bruce. The couple moved to Rochester, N.Y., for Bruce’s employment and lived there for many years. They moved back to Maine in 1992, after he retired. Their home on the Pemaquid Peninsula overlooks the water and is nestled into the woods beside open fields. It is the perfect place to bird and paint.

Babb has studied extensively with many excellent teachers in workshops and seminars. Her career has encompassed foci including portraiture, botanical illustration, and classical drawing. Fascinated with the field of ornithology; she completed the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Home Study Course in Bird Biology and became an avid birder. The focus of her art followed that passion. After landing the prestigious J. Hamlin Scholarship Award for the Study of Ornithology from Audubon Society of Hog Island, Maine, her work was quickly recognized in juried shows, major publications, and private collections across the country and internationally.

Though she uses photography – her own and that of fellow birders – to fine tune details in her paintings, Julie paints only birds she has observed and documented herself. More than 20 years in Maine have provided her with daily inspiration.

Life-long birder BJ Dobson’s “bird bios” for each of Babb’s paintings explains the habits of the birds in the paintings and their relationship with the plants they depend on, whether for food, habitat, or  nesting. Copies of Dobson’s enlightening work are available for the public to take home as supplementary guides to their collection of birding literature. Babb’s and Dobson’s work for this exhibit meshes perfectly with the Gardens’ year-long theme, Feathers and Foliage: Celebrating Bird and Plant Interactions in Maine.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is on Barters Island Road in Boothbay. For more information, call 207-633-4333, ext. 101, or visit www.MaineGardens.org.
