Castle Tucker and Nickels-Sortwell House Open House Days June 1 - 2 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Castle Tucker and Nickels-Sortwell House , Wiscasset

Come and celebrate the beginning of the season with free tours of two of Historic New England and Wiscasset's unique historic house museums. Castle Tucker was lived in by one family from 1858 to 2004. Captain Richard H. Tucker, Jr., son of a prominent Wiscasset shipping family, and his young wife Mollie moved in and redecorated the 1807 house with fashionable Victorian furniture and wallpaper. They added new barns and a three-story piazza. A new addition was added in 1870, but as their family fortune declined over time, the only other changes the Tuckers could afford were new paint and wallpaper. The rest of this 10 bedroom mansion remained intact, as you can see it today! Nickels-Sortwell House went from being the trophy house of a successful ship captain to over 80 years of benign neglect as a hotel. The beautiful Federal style home was rescued in 1899 by wealthy industrialist Alvin Sortwell and his wife Gertrude who purchased it as a summer home for their family of six children. They restored and redecorated this architectural jewel, and it remained a treasured family home until 1957, when it was given to Historic New England. All tours are guided. Tours are on the half hour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last tour leaves at 4:00 p.m.
