Community Calendar

Women in Harmony, Portland’s 60-voice feminist community chorus, celebrates its 25th anniversary season with a concert called “Songs of Resistance.” The program features the premiere of a commissioned piece, Look Out, by noted choral composer Joan Szymko; it is a setting of a poem of the same name by the poet Wendell Berry. The program also highlights a variety of civil rights and protest songs, including several from the Justice Choir Songbook—an outgrowth of the Women’s March on Washington in 2017. About two dozen Women in Harmony alumnae will join current members on Saturday to sing five pieces on the program.

Performances will take place on Saturday, May 19 at the Performing Arts Center at Freeport High School, and on Sunday, May 20 at Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick. Tickets are available at the door, online at www.wihmaine.org, or in Portland Longfellow Books and Starbird Music, in South Portland at Nonesuch Books, in Freeport at Sherman’s Books, and in Brunswick at Gulf of Maine Books. Prices are $15 at the door, $12 advance, $10 student/senior, under 12 free.
