Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. will present an illustrated lecture on Maine's Civil War monuments, which commemorate the service and sacrifice of the 70,000 Mainers who fought in the war. Many feature standing soldiers sculpted in granite or bronze, while others are stone shafts on square pedestals. Inscriptions bear witness to the fundamental reason for the four-year conflict that divided the nation: the preservation of the union. All Civil War enthusiasts are very welcome to come and participate.
