Breastfeeding in the Workplace Resources

June 2, 2017

The Cumberland District Public Health Council has free resources for Cumberland County businesses who want to support breastfeeding mothers in the workplace. It is a Maine State Law for employers to allow breastfeeding employees to take milk expression breaks and provide a place to express milk. Workplace breastfeeding support is a benefit to the mother and her family, and there is a very high return on investment for the employer. Benefits to the employer include:

  • Retention of experienced employees; less time training new employees.
  • Reduction of health care cost; keeps both baby and mother healthier.
  • Increased productivity by the employee; less stress and happier!
  • Less sick time taken; children are sick less often.

Contact Mollie Barnathan (mbarnathan@portlandmaine.gov) at the City of Portland for more information and help in developing breastfeeding policies and practices.
