Maine’s geological blessings include deposits of granite, slate, limestone, and feldspar. Each has given rise to industries that sustained communities through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The rich feldspar veins that run through Topsham generated a vital commercial engine that employed many workers in the difficult and dangerous task of quarrying, transporting, and processing the stone. The well being of families and the community itself rose and fell with the fortunes of the feldspar business. From its first recognition of value in 1751, through the rise to prominence at the beginning of the twentieth century, to its demise during the Great Depression, Topsham’s feldspar industry helped shape the destiny of the community.
A former educator in Brunswick, Fred Koerber’s passion for exploring the rich history of the Pejepscot region has led to several research projects with local students.
