Frontiers of Music #5 will feature five improvised performances. Christopher Cathode weaves percussion, electronics, and amplified 'found-objects' - often abandoned medical and industrial devices - into a post-apocalyptic sonic landscape that brings to mind a landscape of abandoned factories and dwellings. Contrabass soloist Joshua DeScherer presents a virtuosic solo performance featuring extended techniques, and drawing upon the stylistic variety in Dr. DeScherer's musical background. Trumpeter Mark Tipton and shakuhachi player Phil James will play as a duo, blending the sounds of two culturally and sonically disparate wind instruments. Benb Gallagher (percussion), Nick Dentico (bass guitar), and Sequoia Leaf will play as a trio; and the lineup is rounded out by the Richard Nelson Imaginary Ensemble, a flexible and genre-bending ensemble that is able to explore a tremendous variety of music within a single performance.
