CATHANCE RIVER KAYAKING SERIES

July 2, 9, 16 & 23, 2011

The Cathance River, from its headwaters in the town of Bowdoin, flows into Bradley Pond in Topsham, along the farm fields off Rt. 201, and through the Cathance River Gorge, past the Preserve to the Head of Tide where it flows over rocks and a dam. From here it winds about 7 miles through tidewater before emptying into Merrymeeting Bay. The Cathance is very scenic with a remote feel and abundant opportunity to watch for wildlife as we take our time to explore the area.

The series will be in 4 parts:

1. Route 201 to Bradley Pond – Easy meandering paddle outing with little current but may include a beaver dam portage.

2. Head of Tide to Cathance River Preserve – Easy paddle combined with a hike in the preserve and snack stop at the Cathance River Education Alliance Ecology Center.

3. Bowdoinham Boat Launch to Head of Tide – A longer paddle (9 miles round trip) going with the tide in a wider section of the river to the Head of Tide.

4. Bowdoinham Boat Launch to Merrymeeting Bay – Another long paddle (9 miles round trip) going with the tide into Merrymeeting Bay with a stop at an island. This section will require more kayaking experience due to more open water.

This series is a joint effort with The Brunswick Topsham Land Trust (www.btlt.org ), Cathance River Education Alliance (www.creamaine.org), Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (www.fomb.org ), and Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (www.kennebecestuary.org).
