Celebrate the start of the summer season at Historic New England’s annual Open House. Nickels-Sortwell House will be open to the public with free guided tours on thehour and half hour from 11 am to 5 pm, with the last tour leaving at 4:00 pm. Nickels-Sortwell House began life in 1807 as the trophy home of a ship captain at the height of Wiscasset’s fortunes as a sparkling little seaport. After his death in 1815, the house was run as a hotel until 1899 when it was purchased by successful industrialist and former mayor of Cambridge, MA, Alvin Sortwell, as a summer home for his large and active family. The Sortwells restored the house to its former glory, decorating and furnishing it over the years in the Colonial Revival style. Come hear stories that offer a warm and intimate picture of life in the Gilded Age Wiscasset.
