Part of the Local Look at Our Changing Climate Series by BTLT & CREA
Changes in climate have important implications for the world’s forests, but few people realize that forests themselves are part of our climate system.
Si Balch of Manomet Climate Smart Network will describe his decades of observations as a professional forester, and how the work of foresters is changing as conditions change. He’ll consider what any land owner can do to pragmatically manage their forests to be more resilient in the face of change. Adapted from the Maine Forest Service’s Forester Institutes, Balch’s presentation will consider what we actually know about Maine’s changing forest and what is speculation; the opportunities and challenges that climate changes pose for forests and their management; and what anyone managing a forest can do to address changes in forest types, forest access and stream crossings, forest regeneration, and monitoring for invasive pest species in the forest.
