The Fungus Among Us: A Mushroom Discovery Walk 10:00 AM CREA Ecology Center , Topsham

10:00am - 12:00pm

Most people are familiar with many aspects of animals and plants, but did you know there’s another major kingdom of life that’s vital to the ecology? Did you know that fungi make up 90% of the biomass of forest soils? Did you know that at least 90% of vascular land plants (including most of our forest trees) depend upon symbiotic fungi for their health and survival?

Join Maine Master Naturalist Alan Seamans to explore the mushrooms of Cathance River Nature Preserve. Alan will show why fungi are unique and special. We’ll view the vital ecological roles that fungi play, from being the primary decomposers of forest debris, to the under-appreciated mycorrhizal symbiosis with plants. Most of all we will revel in the beauty and diversity of mushrooms all around us.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking/hiking gear. Bring your camera because many mushrooms are photogenic!

Alan Seamans is a Maine Master Naturalist and a lifelong science and nature enthusiast.
