Like so many Maine coastal communities, Topsham is defined by the waters that surround it. But unlike all but a very few of those, Topsham borders a portion of Merrymeeting Bay, which is one of the Northeast's natural wonders.
Incorporated in 1764, Topsham encompasses nearly 44 square miles. It is a suburban residential community with a strong and growing business base, including construction companies, automobile dealerships, health-care agencies, and engineering and legal firms. The Topsham Fair Mall, which opened in 1985, is the community's retail hub. Completed in 1997, the new $42-million Coastal Connector links Interstate 95 in Topsham with U.S. Route 1 in Brunswick, providing far-reaching and positive potential for the town's development. Business opportunities are available in the former Naval Air Station Brunswick Annex property, now known as the Topsham Commerce Park.
