Topic: Civil War Monuments and Race in America
Presenter: Kevin Levin
Venue: NOMAD Gallery, Fort Andross, Brunswick
Date/Time: Friday, September 8 (Joshua Chamberlain’s birthday), 7PM
Over the past few years, hundreds of Civil War monuments commemorating the Confederacy have been removed throughout the country. This type of so-called “public art” has provoked outrage in some and fierce loyalty in others. While the nation remains divided over this issue, few people are aware of the history surrounding these monuments and what they tell us about how Americans have remembered the Civil War era. This talk will help attendees better understand why 100 years later these monuments remain controversial.
