The annual Not-Your-Garden-Variety Plant Sale has become a tradition at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and this year’s shopping event will have new features and a great selection of plants.  The sale is from 9-4 on both Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27 (members only on Saturday until noon). Admission is free to the site of the sale, the Blueberry Parking Lot at the Gardens, off Barters Island Road in Boothbay.

The sale will feature more than 150 varieties of plants, including hard-to-find and unique perennials, native plants, and boutique annuals perfect for container plantings. This year, for the first time ever, a limited number of plants propagated by the Gardens’ very own horticultural staff will be for sale; these new offerings that can be seen in the gardens include several interesting varieties of Solomon’s Seal and a beautiful dwarf iris.

Also for sale while supplies last will be 40-pound bags of the Gardens’ own “Magic Mulch,” the Gardens horticulturists’ “secret weapon.” The nutrient-rich mulch not only works to suppress weeds, moderate the soil temperature, hold moisture, and improve soil fertility; it also works to fertilize plants slowly throughout an entire year.

Along with the fantastic team of volunteers that have run the sale for the past five years, a member of the horticulture staff will be on hand the Saturday of the sale to answer gardening questions and help shoppers choose plants to fit their landscape. The “Not-Your-Garden-Variety” Plant Sale is made possible by the generous donation of time and effort on the part of more than 50 volunteers over the two day-sale and leading up to the event. All proceeds benefit the growth of the Gardens and its gardens.
