(Lecture) Place of Tranquil Beauty - Wiscasset's Sunken Garden 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Nickels-Sortwell House Barn, Federal Street , Wiscasset

After Wiscasset’s Hilton House Hotel burned to the ground in 1903, Frances Sortwell, whose family owned the house across the street, put the hotel’s stone foundation to good use. Miss Frances and her friends, including Rose Ishbel Greeley, one of the first female landscape architects in the country, transformed the dismal site into a magical sunken garden and a place of tranquil beauty. Historic New England’s Cathy Messmer will explore their creation of this special garden space. Included in the discussion will be a look at other sunken gardens created by women in the same period. After the talk, we will walk to the Sunken Garden just across the street. $10 Historic New England members, $15 nonmembers. Registration is required. Space is limited. Please call 207-882-7169 for more information. Purchase tickets now.
