Community Calendar

The Quartet, celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season, is based year-round in Maine. Devoted to performing chamber music both old and new, this program is a perfect balance. The “father of the string quartet”, Franz Josef Haydn, lived from 1732-1809. His String Quartet, Opus 33, No. 3 “The Bird” will open the program. This classic work will be followed by contemporary Australian composer, Peter Schulthorpe’s (b. 1929) String Quartet No. 8. Schulthorpe, born in Tasmania, wrote 17 String Quartets; he began composing at the age of 7. The program will close with the lush, very romantic “Rosamunde” quartet of Franz Schubert (1797-1828).

The Schubert, along with the music of Dvorak and Webern, is available on the DSQ’s newly- released CD, which will be available for sale at the concerts.

The venues for the Haydn, Schulthorpe, Schubert concert are as follows: July 26th at the Kellogg Church in Harpswell; July 27th at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay; July 28th at the Union Church in South Bristol and July 29th at River Tree Arts in Kennebunk.
