Drawing for Hunger

Local Art Show to benefit Hunger Prevention

Points of View Artists, a group of 16 area artists who have worked and exhibited collaboratively since 2005, are combining their love of drawing with their commitment for social good by contributing a portion of the proceeds from their August group show, entitled Drawing for Hunger, to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program.

As informal participants in the 2011 Maine Drawing Project, a statewide visual arts initiative developed by the Maine Curators Group,  Points of View Artists took their dedication to drawing in its many forms and chose the theme Drawing for Hunger.  This was inspired by the work four of the artists do as volunteers for the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Project.

Ed McCartan, exhibiting artist and MCHPP volunteer spoke to the motivation of the group in dedicating their show to hunger prevention, "I feel blessed to be able to create and share my art in the greater Brunswick community.  I and my Points of View artist friends feel strongly that we want to give back to our supportive community.  My work at the Soup Kitchen offers me a very rewarding opportunity, as does creating the drawings for our August group show."

Drawing for Hunger opens August 1 and runs through the 28th at Points of View Art Gallery in the Brunswick Business Center.  The opening reception to meet the artists is Friday, August 12 from 5 to 8 pm during the 2nd Friday Art Walk.

20 percent of all sales will be donated to MCHPP to support its food bank, food pantry and soup kitchen programs.  In addition, the original 2nd Friday Art Walk poster image, 3 Bowls by Judith Long, will be raffled off, with proceeds also going to MCHPP.

Points of View Artists exhibit their original paintings, drawings, prints, collages, sculpture and photographs throughout the year in the hallways and conference rooms of the Brunswick Business Center, 18 Pleasant Street.  Hours for Points of View Art Gallery at 18 Pleasant Street, Brunswick:  9 am to 5 pm weekdays; also Saturday, August 13, 10 am to 2 pm.  Info:  207-373-9300.

The Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program provides food assistance, referrals and sustainable living education to people in need from Brunswick, Topsham, Harpswell, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls and Durham, Maine.  Last year, the agency served over 1000 families in the Food Pantry and 27,000 meals in the Soup Kitchen and engaged 250 volunteers.  For more information about services or volunteer opportunities, contact 725-2716.
