E-ZPass Presentation at Husson University 4:00 PM Kominsky Auditorium, Peabody Hall, Husson University, 1 College Circle , Bangor

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Communications and Computer Society – Maine Chapter will be hosting a presentation about the Maine Turnpike’s E-ZPass System on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 4 p.m. in Peabody Hall’s Kominsky Auditorium on the Bangor campus of Husson University. The presentation is free and open to the public.

“This is a great way to learn more about a highly sophisticated computer system that affects Maine citizens every day,” said Julia T. Upton, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mathematics at Husson University’s College of Science and Humanities and the vice chair of the IEEE Communications and Computer Society - Maine Chapter. “Thanks to advanced technology, the public now has a seamless and accurate electronic method of paying tolls and fees in 17 states. This presentation will give those in attendance a better understanding of how computers make this system possible.”

Launch in 1987 by several toll agencies in the northeast corridor, E-ZPass allows motorists, traveling through participating toll facilities, to pay their tolls automatically from a prepaid account without having to fumble for cash or retrieve and present a toll ticket. It uses a small electronic tag attached to an automobile’s windshield. Cars with this tag can pass through a toll lane equipped with a “reader” that collects and transmits customer account status electronically to the appropriate toll agency. The correct toll is then charged or credited to a customer’s account.

The presentation at Husson will focus on the technology, data analytics and business implications of E-ZPass. The presenters will also talk about the importance of network reliability. After all, if the network is down, revenue is lost.

Leading the presentation will be Peter Mills, Turnpike executive director and Bill Yates, Turnpike director of IT. In addition to receiving a comprehensive explanation of the E-ZPass system, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.

The presentation will also talk about student internship opportunities. As an added incentive to students, the IEEE Communications – Maine Chapter will be providing free pizza to all in attendance.

IEEE members interested in attending can register for the events at events.vtools.ieee.org/meeting_registration/register/169604. Non-members are also welcome to attend and can register by emailing Ron Brown, the IEEE Communications and Computer Society – Maine Chapter chair at ron@ronaldobrownconsulting.com.
