Vernal Pools
Vernal pools are center stage this time of year, and we’ll look at what they are, why they are important, and what we are studying on the Cathance Preserve in our own vernal pools. Amanda Shearin, Ph.D. Candidate in Ecology and Environmental Sciences, University of Maine, will conduct a lively presentation regarding this very unique and precious habitat. Vernal pools are essential breeding, feeding and resting areas for a large number of species, including several rare and endangered species in the Northeast, such as the Blue-Spotted Salamander, Blanding’s Turtle and the Eastern Ribbon Snake.
