The speakers for the evening will be John Bradford and David B. Wyman, P.E. Maine’s First Ship is building a Pinnace named VIRGINIA, a reconstruction of the first English Ship built in North America at the Popham Colony at the Mouth of the Kennebec, which began the history of Shipbuilding in Maine.

John Bradford is the Author of “The 1607 Popham Colony’s Pinnace Virginia”. John Bradford has been a member of Maine’s First Ship almost from its inception in 1997. As chair of the Vessel Committee, John oversaw research into England’s shipbuilding methods by assembling existing parameters and proportions from a variety of period documents. Some were expressing the basic geometry and algebra that was just beginning to duplicate what was in a typical shipwright’s head. This period was literally the start of formal Naval Architecture, and the growth of increasingly sophisticated mathematical knowledge to support it. John has also been deeply involved with the archaeology at the Popham Colony site since 1997. Archeology at Ft. St. George has shown its’ colonists capable, well organized, and decisive. Constructing and operating the small but rugged Virginia exemplifies those features with her two documented Atlantic crossings, a fine start to Maine’s shipbuilding tradition.

David B. Wyman, P.E. of Castine, Maine has been the Naval Architect for Maine’s First Ship design of Virginia. David and John have traveled together to view several tall ships informing themselves on early shipbuilding construction throughout the east coast.
