The SBIR Summer Session is an annual event where Maine Technology Institute (MTI)  hosts federal agencies who come to Maine to present about their SBIR/STTR programs and to meet with entrepreneurs and companies one-on-one to discuss specific topics and opportunities. The SBIR/STTR program is a +$2.5 Billion annual federal government program targeting innovative technologies developed by small businesses. This year seven federal agencies are sending representatives to Maine to discuss their SBIR/STTR programs and specific topics of interest for applications. Those agencies include 

• Department of Agriculture 
• Department of Education 
• Department of Homeland Security 
• Department of Transportation 
• Environmental Protection Agency 
• National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 
• National Aeronautics and Space Administration

MTI works with many companies and organizations each year through our Technical Assistance Program (TAP) to prepare compelling SBIR/STTR applications. Over the last ten years MTI has helped more than ninety (90) companies and organizations win SBIR/STTR awards totaling more than $87 million. In addition, several Maine companies have been selected for the SBA's Tibbetts award for their innovative technology products, processes or services. MTI is committed to helping Maine companies win more SBIR/STTR grants and bringing more federal funding to the state.

The important aspects of the SBIR/STTR grant program are:

• It is a grant program with no repayment requirements
• The program is set-aside for small businesses (under 500 employees)
• Under the SBIR/STTR program the applicant retains all intellectual property rights
• There are two phases: Phase I awards up to $150,000 for feasibility efforts and Phase II awards up to $1 million for prototype development
