Diagnostic Imaging at Mid Coast Hospital Celebrates National Radiologic Technology Week

November 27, 2011

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Mid Coast Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging department celebrates National Radiologic Technology Week (NRTW), recognizing the dedication and accomplishments of its radiologic technologists and supporting staff, who all contribute a great deal to patient care. NRTW is celebrated each year during the week that includes November 8.  It was on this day in 1895 that German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered the x-ray.  This year the department will celebrate by participating in a variety of games and challenges including scavenger hunts, trivia quizzes, and photo recognition contests. The theme will be “The Guiding Vision in Medicine.”

Mid Coast’s Diagnostic Imaging department is staffed by approximately 65 Technologist covering seven modalities and four satellite locations.  Although being a radiographer is a specialty in itself, many of Mid Coast’s technologists have specialized and become certified in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cardiac-interventional procedures, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and breast imaging.  These technologists embrace a world where technology is constantly advancing.  They remain open to new ideas, changing workflows, and continuing education is essential. The technologists take great pride in knowing that what they do, day in and day out, helps to identify disease and injury, plan treatment, and ultimately restore patient health.

In addition to its radiologic technologists, Mid Coast Hospital employs eight support staff members and four radiology nurses who all pride themselves in giving outstanding customer service. Starting with the schedulers, to reception, to patient records, Mid Coast patients feel welcome and well cared for. Nurses contact patients scheduled for invasive procedures pre- and post-procedure to educate them on what to expect and answer any questions. They also review important information prior to the procedure using their unique nursing skills to focus on patient safety and assure patient-focused care.
