People's United Community Foundation Awards More Than $182,000 in Grants to Non-Profits in Maine

PEOPLE’S UNITED COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS MORE THAN $182,000 IN GRANTS TO NONPROFITS IN MAINE PORTLAND, ME – People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, N.A., announced the awards of $182,500 in grants to 32 nonprofit organizations throughout Maine during 2020.   This year’s grant donations were focused on COVID-19 relief and recovery efforts. Organizations working with communities that are disproportionately impacted by the pandemic were provided with flexible funding to use however it was needed. Funding was allocated to 32 nonprofit organizations that are addressing the communities’ most urgent needs and challenges, including basic needs, workforce development, housing, and financial education counseling in addition to helping organizations pivot to virtual educational programming and the continuation of vital support and family services for vulnerable populations Read more...

Mid Coast Hospital Administers First Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine to Front-Line Caregivers Brunswick, Maine – Mid Coast Hospital administered the first vaccinations for COVID-19 to its front-line caregivers today. At 7:30 a.m. Paul LaPrad, MD, became the first care team member at Mid Coast Hospital to receive the vaccine. LaPrad has been a pulmonologist in the community for 25 years, and has been caring for COVID-19 patients at Mid Coast Hospital since March. Read more...

Amtrak Downeaster Celebrates 19 Years Connecting the Midcoast to Boston

This week marks the 19th Anniversary of Amtrak Downeaster service between Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. Since December 15, 2001, more than 65,000 Downeaster trains have operated, transporting more than 7.62 million passengers the equivalent of nearly 658 million passenger miles.  The Downeaster transports a diverse cross-section of riders who travel for a variety of purposes including commuter, college students, senior citizens, school kids on educational trips, sports fans, beach goers and tourists and more. Brunswick, ME – Mid Coast Hospital has announced the launch of its 2020 Annual Giving Campaign. This year’s campaign will be led by two well-regarded community members, Eleanor “Smokey” Morrell and Elizabeth “Betsy” Niven, whose nearly 50 years of service and leadership in the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary have inspired many. These exceptional women have served on various boards and committees within the hospital, as well as having staffed the information desk, café, and gift shop. Only 21% of U.S. skilled nursing facilities have achieved this designation. Part of Mid Coast–Parkview Health, Mid Coast Senior Health earned Best Nursing Homes status by achieving a rating of “High Performing,” the highest possible rating, for its Long-Term Care at Mere Point and Rehabilitation at Bodwell communities.
